Shreveport City Council to cut arts budget by as much as 80% if there's no political response; meeting Tues, Nov 18, 5:15 pm, City Council Chambers, 505 Travis

The Shreveport City Council is holding a hearing today, Tues, Nov 18, on proposed budget cuts. SRAC’s funding is facing an 80% cut from the city’s budget, says Pam Atchison.

The hearing will be held at 5:15 pm in City Council Chambers at Government Plaza. It would be great if you could come
and supports the arts in our community, says Atchison and staff.

Tus, Nov 18, 5:15 pm
Government Plaza / City Council Chambers
505 Travis Street

Being political beings, the council and mayor will take the box cutter to arts funding unless recognizable and viable voices speak out. I'd suggest that if you cannot attend this meeting you email or phone your city council rep or the mayor's office.

I sent my full one-page plea and suggestions to the council email.

I hope all goes well.

Why do we need art? Bossier City seems to get along with out it. They were even named as the place to raise a kid in Louisiana without a speck of culture within their city limits.

Why try to be like New York City or Dallas or Portland or Bloomington or Richmond or Phoenix or Austin? Culture, art, romance, dance, fun, joy, laughter, deep thoughts, terrific sites, lovely smells are all very highly overrated. Let's just be Sportsman's (dames not invited) Paradise and leave it at that.

Pardon me while I go watch the Vagina Monologues again...or perhaps I ought not. Is there a race on TV where I can just watch soothing cars go round and round and round and round...OMG...crash...yellow flag...pause it. I gotta go pee...yeah, I better not watch anymore Eve Ensler...has anyone seen my vagina puppet?

What if the ARTISTS in Shreveport got together & created a real arts community/culture?

Wouldn't that be cool?

Hitler was for government-funded(controlled) arts...as a professional artist, I'm not.

SRAC is worthless..it does nothing but throw parties to raise money to throw more parties..it doesnt support local artists or local art. It has become an elitist piece of garbage, the money would be served better going straight into the arts programs at local schools, art galleries and community theatres rather than being put into SRACS pocket and letting them decide where it goes, which always ends up back in their pocket to throw more worthless parties.
