Among the new vendors at Texas Avenue Makers Fair on Sat, Nov 10, 10 to 5 pm: jewelry and decor designer EllenDeeNola

Chockablock with artisanal goodness, I highly recommend reading the list of vendors ready for the Texas Ave Makers Fair. Having skimmed the list, a thought remains: bring more money to the fair.

Among the fresh vendors is charming recent transplant Laura D'Arcangelo, aka EllenDeeNola. On her Etsy site she says, " I have moved to Shreveport, Louisiana to finish school and have a nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of New Orleans. I do miss the city already but this has been a great change for me! I am letting myself get inspired by my new home, and I have been busy whipping up some new jewelry for you!"

A production of the Texas Ave Community Assoc, the Makers Fair takes place at the corner of Texas Avenue and Common Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71101.
Sat, Nov 10, 10 am to 5 pm.

Coordinator is Kelly McSwain, 949-412-5225. Or makersfair@texasave.org.

Across the street from and concurrent with the Makers Fair is another Best of Shreveport event: The Aseana Autumn Festival, featuring Asian Street Food, music and fireworks. The Aseana Foundation event begins at 9 am and goes to 8:30 pm.

The success of Smorgasburg, Brooklyn, spurs the question, "Shouldn't Shreveport have a year-round Farmers Market?"

smorgasburg by sukhchander

Shouldn't the foodies of the greater Shreveport-Bossier area be discussing a year-round Farmers Market?" asks members of A Better Shreveport.

These NY Times articles on Smorgasburg, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the Brooklyn Flea, offer ideas and direction.

Even more inspiration should animate potential movers and shakers when they visit the Texas Ave Makers Fair on Sat, Nov 10.

Have fun as a volunteer at the Highland Jazz & Blues Fest on Sat, Nov17, 11:30 am to 5 pm, Columbia Park, Shreveport

Volunteers are most definitely needed at one of Shreveport's mellowest fests, the HJ&BF.

While the music jumps, the food, cokes and beer flow. People meet their friends and cut a rug.

Be a sustaining part of the action, urges Kenney Koonce, by volunteering online for one or more 3-hour shifts.

It's Sat, Nov 17, 11:30 am to 5 pm at Columbia Park, Creswell Ave @ Columbia St, Shreveport, LA.

Movie review: Ben Affleck's historic drama Argo is a feel-good movie that's good for us

IRAN-ELECTION/ by rosa_roshan
IRAN-ELECTION/, a photo by rosa_roshan on Flickr.

Ben Affleck's adventure movie, Argo, is a fast-paced espionage story. Yet it is based on a historic event. It is the story of one chapter in the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis: the rescue of 6 American diplomatic workers who slipped through the Iranian revolutionaries' net.

While it appeals to people who were alive during the Carter era, I recommend it to all audiences. The mistakes made by the CIA, by the State Dept and the President are palpable. It opens a door that could lead to learning more about Iran as well as the CIA.

It's a rare piece: a feel-good movie that's good for us.

Dylan music from the new Lane Bayliss Group at Tiki Bar on Sat, Oct 27, 10 pm

"I am inviting you to please come and hear a new grouping of musicians this Sat., October 27, at the Tiki Bar on Kings Hwy around 10 or soon after - we will be waiting until the big football game ends," says former Dirtfoot drummer Lane Bayliss.

"There are several styles and directions of music I hope to be involved in very soon but due to the limited time available to get it together for this particular gig I am going with and wish to present a night of Bob Dylan music along with some dear friends.
It would be such a pleasure to see you there and share the night together. As I did not come up with a group name in time the club has named it something like the Lane Bayliss Group."

Rachul McClintic presents artist talk on photos in "Double Standard"exhibit, Meadows Museum, Shreveport, Sun, Oct 21, 2 pm

Featured artist Rachul McClintic discusses her work Sun, Oct 21, at 2 pm at Meadows Museum, Shreveport

Double Standard: Photographs by Rachul McClintic

The photographs of Rachul McClintic reference the sexual double standard placed on women that often hinders sexual as well as other freedoms. Of her work, McClintic states, “From my experience and observation many intimate relationships contribute to sexual objectification, fixations, and destructive obsessions. To assert visual gender commentary, my work utilizes body language, symbolic spaces and autobiographical subject matter.” McClintic is the sole photographer and director of a photographic shoot and often places herself in images as part of the subject matter. Her work continuously debates and visually reverses sexual double standards and is a process that McClintic describes as “evolutionary and revealing.”

Clyde Connell art exhibit open at Longvue Gardens, New Orleans; display continues to Dec 30, 2012

With a mystical view of nature and a deep connection to her home in northwest Louisiana, artist Clyde Connell created sculptures and wall reliefs, says Longvue Gardens, that expressed her sympathy with the culture of African-Americans and the pictographic works of “music heard on the bayous”.

Selected works will be on exhibit at Longue Vue Oct 19 to Dec 30.

Connell became internationally known in the 1970s during an increased awareness of stylistic pluralism, feminism, and “regional artists”. She first exhibited works outside of Louisiana in 1974 at the Bauman Gallery in Los Angeles and made her New York debut at the Delahunty Gallery in 1980.

Her work is included in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Tex. She has been represented since 1986 by the Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans.

Connell passed away in 1998 at the age of 97, leaving behind a superb body of work.

Dugout Canoe, a photo by Sipolandis on Flickr.

The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum's most exciting feature may be the Caddo Culture dugout, a 1,000 year old vessel carved from a single Bald Cypress tree, says Wayne Waddell.

Discovered in the banks of Red River, the dugout measures almost thirty-one feet in length.

That sight and more will be celebrated Sat, Oct 20, noon to 4 pm as the LSEM re-opens the Clarence Webb Galleries.

There will be hands-on demonstrations on tool making by the Chipalottas and gallery talks with archaeologists. There will also be a video telling the story of how the dugout came to the museum.

Phil Cross, member of the Caddo Nation who is an expert in working with wood, will relate his experience making bows and dugouts.

The exhibit will be on display during regular museum hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The museum is located at 3015 Greenwood Road, between Hearne and Jewella Streets.

Fresh drum & hoop circle building on Tuesdays beginning at 6 pm on Shreveport riverfront; percussion, guitars, flutes, dancers, art mavens, photographers welcome

Shreveport Drumming Along the River is a group for drummers, musicians, dancers, and anyone else interested in getting together to hang out, says Brandon Eiland Barre.

If you have an art ~Any Art ~, share it!
Obviously, with winter coming, we won't be able to get too many Tuesdays in before it's too cold, but there's no time like the present!
The concept is simple... on Tuesdays around 6pm, at your leisure, just come out to the riverfront and say hi. Stay until dark:30'ish. And then repeat weekly!
No money involved... no agenda... just people building community.

Says Barre, "I'm from Harrisburg, Pa., and we started a similar group there 4 years ago. It has grown from 8 to over 300 people in that time. The effects ripple out as people find others with like interests and develop friendships. This is a community builder."

The Louisiana Film Prize, Shreveport : a boatload of short stories to watch and you and I have a voice in who wins the $50,000

It's almost like Shreveport is returning to its historic roots as a gambler's town. All these wild-eyed filmmakers in the Louisiana Film Prize Top 20 are gunning for the big money.

Looking sharp - eh, Philip Jordan Brooks - and innocent - ahem, Calvin O' Neal, Jr - and trying to woo the crowd. Because the crowd's vote constitutes 50% of the winning total.

Last spring and summer the writers, like Evan Falbaum, above, directors, like Erica Callais, and film crews hit the streets of Shreveport. Like bandits.

Short on cash, they tried to make it on flash. Like obsessed fools - I'm not thinking of Mindy Bledsoe - all they could see was the big score.

As though they were gunsels pulling down oiled pieces from a special rack, the hungry movie makers - would that include John Goddard, the physician-actor arts producer? - pulled nifty short scripts from their shelves.

Verbal bling will sparkle on Texas St this Fri and Sat as these grifters invite you to be seduced by their tales.

Watch their movies at Robinson Film Center, minicine? and at the Capri. One ticket: $20 for 20 short narratives.

Watch yourself. These are guileful Guillermos. Prepare by reading this terrific
and brief summary of the movies produced by the slicksters at the Shreveport Times.

The third chapter book, Toothiana, Queen of the Tooth Fairy Armies, introduces one of the most riveting, mysterious Guardians of all time: the Tooth Fairy.

The Sandman: The Story of Sanderson Mansnoozie, the second picture book in the series, tells how the Sandman dreamed up his sweet-dreams legacy.

William Joyce will have a hometown book signing to celebrate on Sun, Oct 7 at 3pm @ Barnes & Noble, 6646 Youree Drive, Shreveport.

Says Moonbot's Sara Hebert, "He's really excited about the signing and is hoping it's even better than the Morris Lessmore book event."
