Shreveport Farmer's Market returns June 5; will be open 7 to noon on Saturdays and 3 to 6 pm on Tuesdays

"Remember to wear your walkin' shoes and bring small bills," says Noma Folwer-Sandlin of the Sat, June 5 opening of the Shreveport Farmer's Market.

She adds, "The market has grown from 65 booths to 105! Not just produce; also amazing baked goods, jams and jellies, beef, crafts, and all other great home made, market or farm fresh foods. Plus signs letting you know where it was grown and what percentage was grown by the person selling it. Plus all sorts of foods including meat, cheese and wine."

"We will have our baked goods," says vendor Eric Drabwell, "including ANZAC (Aussie Oatmeal Coconut), Choc Chip, Choc Chip Extreme, Caramel Surprise, Ginger Snap with Cayenne and more, but we will also this year be continuing to sell our Smoked Salmon. Its very good! We sell it vacuum sealed by the piece.

Also my wife, Amy, turns it into Smoked Salmon Dip and that is yummy.
Be early for the Smoked Salmon products too as it tends to "walk out the door!"

101 Crockett Street - Under the Pavilion in Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport - take the Market St exit from I-20 if you're driving from Texas.

Tues: 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Sat: 7:00 am - 12:00 pm

"And, adds Kathryn Usher, "while you are enjoying the bounty of the Farmers' Market don't forget the art market at the Barnwell Center. Noma's right about those walking shoes since the Barnwell sits on the river. But you can always cool off in the fountain play area. Better yet, park by Sci-Port and park in the middle of both events."

And we happily add an invitation to a new downtown festival, Saturday in the Square. The all-ages fest opens at 3 pm under the Texas St bridge, an area once known as Shreve Square and recently as the Red River District.

4 to 5:30 pm DJ Quickie Mart (aka Martin Arceneaux)

Shreveport-raised guitarist-singer Papa Mali leads the band 7 Walkers with Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann

"Shreveport's own Mal Welbourne, aka Papa Mali, is currently leading the newest, hottest jam band on the planet, a group called 7 Walkers," says music maven Bruce Flett. "Bill Kreutzman on drums (Grateful Dead), George Porter Jr on bass (Meters, Neville Bros). They are Sold Out everywhere, coast to coast. What a rhythm section. Papa Mali is the da' main man!"

Papa Mali, raised as Malcolm Welbourne in Shreveport during the 60's, is today hailed as "a musical shaman." On his recent solo album Do Your Thing (Fog City) Welbourne gives credit for some of his background to the late Shreveport bluesman John Campbell.

Papa Mali was one of the founders of the Shreveport-born reggae band the Killer Bees. As a solo performer he has often returned to Shreveport to play the Mudbug Fest. Otherwise he treks across the world playing festivals and slips home to Austin for all-night raves.

While being raised in Shreveport, Mali had a lot of New Orleans in his life. The Meters and the Wild Tchoupitoulas touched him as a young listener. Afterwards, "Along with Jimi Hendrix, Leo Nocentelli was my hero."

LoVid, bringing to Shreveport their Sync Armonica, is an interdisciplinary artist duo composed of Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus.

Based in NYC, the LoVid work includes live video installations, sculptures, digital prints, patchworks, media projects, performances, and video recordings, says minicine?. They combine many opposing elements in their work, contrasting hard electronics with soft patchworks, analog and digital, or handmade and machine produced objects. This multidirectional approach is also reflected in the content of their work: romantic and aggressive, wireless and wire-full.

Lovid is interested in the ways in which the human body and mind observe, process, and respond to both natural and technological environments, and in the preservation of data, signals, and memory.

Mr. Christopher will open the evening with a special concoction of ambient music with keys and lapsteel.

Ian Quiet (SHV) returns to perform and release his new CD, Pu Pu Platter, featuring guest artists Meredith Mighell, Megan Westbrook (both of SHV) and Jason Siren (Santa Fe, NM). Pu Pu Platter is Ian’s fourth CD release and consist of 10 Asian and/or water themed song works. CD’s will be available for purchase at this release.

The Occidentalists, is Allison and Jordan West, who will stage an interactive installation of sorts entitled “Trying to Get Closer”, merging altered, wearable, thrift store finds with video projection and sound.

SHV’8 is on the walls, new works by eight of Shreveport’s most mysterious visual artists… including, Morgan Thomas, Jamie Heiges, Brittany Baucum, Jimmy Parrish, Brittney Maddox, Jon Mackey, John Martin and James Cousins II. For some, this event will also be a send off for Mr. Mackey, who will be leaving for a year in Mexico to work with communities along the Texas/Mexico border…

Fun events on ShreveportBossierFunguide.com and on Shreveport Blog are Googleable; events on Facebook are not

"Facebook does not permit Google to reach most categories of information placed on the site," says Google software engineer Matt Cutts in a NY Times article, adding, “Google can only know what it can crawl.”

Therefore, events producers posting their events on Facebook have not done all that can be done in regards promotions. Announcements will continue to be enhanced by being posted on blogs and calendars.

Yet “What the statistics point to is a rise in Facebook, a decline in blogging, and before that, a decline in personal Web pages. The trend is clear, said Susan Herring of Indiana University — Facebook is displacing these other forms of online publication."

Dirty Redd Crenshaw booked for stage role as Miles Davis in New Orleans-based production

Dirty Redd is "Ground Zero" of Shreveport Cool, writes Bruce Flett.

In an upcoming live production, Redd will be playing the part of Miles Davis. Written by renowned playwright David Louis Whitehead, "Miles Davis: Narration and Tunes" will premier in New Orleans and Shreveport. A national tour is in the planning stages.

Don Crenshaw is horn man Dirty Redd. For over five years he played trumpet for the legendary Johnny Taylor.

Redd has become a Shreveport musical landmark since soul crooner Taylor passed away years ago. Crenshaw leads his own band playing smooth jazz, old school R&B, and party songs at clubs, festivals, and special events of all kinds.

Redd is much in demand as a trumpet player, playing often with Robin & the Bluebirds, Caravan band, Denial, and other groups. He also is a very soulful singer with a style similar to Bill Withers.

Dirty Redd Jam hosts a jam session every Thursday at Noble Savage Tavern on Texas Street. Ft. Worth, Texas was his hometown. Now Shreveport has adopted him as their own.

Self Titled Dirty Redd , his first solo CD, has been released, containing 10 originals in his own "smooth jazz" style. "Ground Zero" is one of the featured tracks.
