Shreveport Opera returns to Riverview Theater, says Eric Dillner, with a sanguinary Broadway piece by Stephen Sondheim: Sweeney Todd, Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It is the opening of the 59th season of Shreveport Opera.
In a rehearsal last night the set exploded with colorful projections though the cast portrayed life on the down and out in London. Recently the cast and production were profiled by Times writer Alex Kent.

Got a review from Neil Johnson: "I highly recommend Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. I saw the dress rehearsal last night and it is top notch and very contemporaryly cool. Great singing, acting and good local tech support for the creative use of projections invented by the director. The scene set in the old London insane asylum is a must-see with the chorus of local singers. It may be a Steven Sondheim musical, but it feels very much like opera because of the quality of voices and the fact that 98% is sung, thus making this an excellent intro to opera!
One word of warning: whenever a throat is sliced open--and once quite gushingly--they use an electronic sound effect that is actually painful to the ears. On purpose. This sound effect is used a number of times. Enjoy.
