Melody Kiper, Savannah School of Art grad, designed the catfish sculpture that will be used across the city in a benefit for Volunteers for Youth Justice, says Susan Stafford.
The 5 foot-long fish will be painted in divers designs by artists and displayed in numerous locations 'round the city. Similar benefits have been built around sculpted horses and cows.
The fish will leap into public view the summer of 08, says the site katfish4kids.com. At that site artists and potential sponsors will find their guidelines. Background on the Volunteers for Youth Justice program will be found at vyjla.org.

Photographer Neil Johnson in the great Atchafalaya Basin: what they eat for breakfast
It is always a pleasure to get a reminder of What They Eat in the Atchafalaya Basin. Especially from someone with a 900 mm lens and decades of experience in lighting and composition. This catch is from one of the best: author-artist-photog Neil Johnson.
Once the Atchafalaya brought a full smile to our faces. It was, like, crawfish and catfish, gators and crusty Cajun trapper-fishermen. The greatest riverine basin in America.
Today we are aware of the loss of this marsh to saltwater incursion. We are aware that tampering with the Mississippi's outlet route - the Atchafalaya is one of those - is part of the problem that faces New Orleanians and people from Barataria Bay to Lake Charles. The swamp has turned problematic and complex.
The Atchafalaya is something like the last half of a bowl of gumbo on a cold day. All of a sudden you're not simply filling the belly; you're going to savor it. Get your children to taste it. Talk about it between spoonfuls.

John Salmon in the kitchen at Abby Singer's Bistro, Robinson Film Center, Shreveport; open 11 am to 11 pm, daily - but beginning Tues at 5 pm
Robinson Film Center opened with an ultradiluvian upbash this weekend. Now it's time to see movies in the two theaters and sample the sushi, etc, at Abby Singer's Bistro (I shall let them tell you about the name).

During the packed weekend opening I was chatting with a downtown professional who said, with a sigh, "There's just no place to eat downtown." Inasmuch as we were peering at Texas St from the Abby Singer Bistro balcony, I was gentle in explaining that he could now eat at the Bistro during lunch, afternoon, supper, etc. And didn't need to see a movie to enjoy a meal.
Ah, Shreveport.

Artists' call for Volunteers for Youth Justice benefit, Shreveport : katfish4kids project
Artists will be paid to become a part of the largest public art project in the history of Caddo Parish, says Traci D Howerton.
Over 100 large, uniquely decorated, fiberglass catfish sculptures will be on display across Shreveport and Bossier City for several months beginning in the summer of 2008. We need you to bring these sculptures to life, says Howerton.
To enter, an artist must submit…

* An Artist Resume
* Three sets of 8 ½ X 11 full color sheets with suggested katfish design
* Once selected the artist will submit his or her design for a fish to the sponsor and the "Katfish4Kids” Committee

Jayne Marie on Cross Lake, Shreveport, has not shut down; main dining room closed, bar will serve menu classics and present live music, says Jayne Lanza
Jayne Marie Restaurant is back after a brief absence. "In the coming weeks we will be reorganizing," writes Jayne Lanza in an update to her recent note in which she confirmed the closing of Jayne Marie on Cross Lake. "The main dining room will be closed for a few weeks but the bar will be open and serving our Jayne Marie favorites (fried catfish, steak, trout, crawfish, burgers and appetizers). On weekends, we will be having live entertainment in the form of a duo or solo. Good bar music for those who want to just come out and have great food at great prices. Or, those who want to enjoy the beatuiful Cross Lake can come out and dock their boat."
Later in the summer, she believes, "Our concept will change from "fine dining" to a Live Entertainment serving Cajun and Creole cuisine. Much more casual and a more affordable price point."
Friday night, May 15, the Jayne Marie bar will feature Bruce Flett and Jerry Beach, 7 to 10:30 pm.

A couple of nights and a few delicious pounds in Lafayette, La: Alicia Ault for the NY Times
If you're tired of thinking about the endless conundrum called Post-Katrina New Orleans but still need a gulf coast sojourn, maybe Lafayette is your cup of fish. Writer Alicia Ault penned a 36 Hours in Lafayette for the NY Times travel section this week. A few excerpts follow:
BAPTISM OF FIRE
Start your culinary tour at Prejean’s Restaurant (3480 Interstate 49, North Lafayette; 337-896-3247), a semi-haute tribute to that South Louisiana trinity of salt, fat and deep-frying. “If you’re on a diet, you came to the wrong place,” chirped our waiter, Sebastian. Prejean’s has the scent of a tourist trap, with a 14-foot, 600-pound alligator watching over the dining room, but the food is the real deal. Start with the crawfish enchilada ($6.99), a baked cheese-covered tortilla rolled in a deathly rich crawfish-tail-studded velouté and move on to the blackened catfish étouffée, a moist fillet topped with a pile of roux-covered crawfish tails ($17.99).
ROOTS AND BEER
Since opening in 2002, the Blue Moon Saloon (215 East Convent Street, 877-766-2583; www.bluemoonpresents.com) has grown from a quirky youth hostel to a premier place to listen to local Cajun, zydeco and swamp pop, as well as national roots acts like the Iguanas and the Weary Boys.
BOOGIE-WOOGIE OMELETS
After eight years, it’s no longer a novelty, but the zydeco breakfast at Café Des Amis in Breaux Bridge (140 East Bridge Street, 337-332-5273) still packs them in every Saturday morning from 8:30 until the band stops at 11.
SOHO IN GRAND COTEAU
Near a convent on Grand Coteau’s main street is an understated restaurant whose ambience somehow suggests a cross between a quiet country inn and Manhattan chic. The polished wood floors and oversize Kodachrome-rich photographs of local flora and fauna are the perfect backdrop to the sophisticated Louisiana-rooted offerings at Catahoula’s (234 Martin Luther King Drive, 337-662-2275).
Ault has more on food and music, including the news that Grant Street dancehall has reopened.
Sadly, she ignores the rest of the arts scene. Try the ULM Museum for starters. And if you're serious about South Louisiana, check out Rebecca Hudsmith's 3 articles on the scene in Arnaudville. They ran on SptBlog in June.

Bistineau Gallery is part of Kristi Hanna's Harmony Center in downtown Shreveport.
Michael G. Moore is a painter and founder of Northwest Louisiana Art Gallery. The artists in the group show, Bill Gingles, Mark Charleville, Allison Dickson, Robert Trudeau and Talbot Hopkins (see more on each of them earlier) each show their work on his online gallery.
The Bistineau reception drew a variety of guests, from a young woman who'd come from fishing - she showed me the catfish slime on the sleeve of her leather jacket - to tuxedo-clad revelers on their way to Carnival balls. Past the urbane white walls of Bistineau Gallery visitors found they could enter the dark red walls of the Harmony & Healing Center, Kristi & Bruce Allen's home for dance, drama, cabalistic conjurations, sculpture and paintings - there are scores of large, exuberant canvasses by Kristi that may one day be reckoned a national treasure. The untutored simply gawk; they cannot be expected to comprehend Hanna's vision or energy. Home to the intuitive and ever-evolving Visual Sound & Movement Dance Company, the center also hosts lessons in dance and yoga. There was a mirrored sitting room. Sinuous music emanated from the dimly lit audience seating area. There was a darkened stage surrounded by large paintings and filled with rag sculptures. Entered via another passageway was Robin Rothrock's romantic art gallery. "Even the bathrooms are totally amazing," one guest said. They are vividly painted in messages and symbols from foot to lightbulb.
