An art bar in Shreveport that features alternative bands from across the country and was decorated by local artists: the Jackrabbit Lounge, King's Hwy

Shreveport's most colorful, most communal and art-filled, alt-rock bar is managed by Jen Wasson, an English major who loves books and film. Under a gigantic Joe's Bar & Grill sign on King's Highway across from Centenary College lies her funk palace. Once called Lil Joes, it is now the Jackrabbit Lounge. "It used to be a black-walled shi*hole with t-shirts on the walls," says Frank Jones, staff member and musician.

The Jackrabbit Lounge was recreated in the image of David Nelson's Zebra Room by a group of young artists who were inspired by downtowner Nelson, an architect, artist and producer of art and music shows.

A cast of tens helped Wasson re-paint and re-upholster the room. "It was Ali Dickson's concept," said Brittney Maddox. "Sizer Yerger painted an entire wall," said Wasson. "The Peekers repainted the stage and installed the astroturf and put the flowers around the speakers," said Michael Stevens. "It's art from people who frequent the bar," added Jones. Contributors include "Sherry Teer, Lance, Pearl, Aubrey Ballard, John Mackie, Carter Sutton, Meredith Mighell, Frank Jones, Christy Herren, Bryan Sullivan. And Jordan West. John Martin and Levette Fuller."

"Almost everyone did a chair," said Wasson. It is also furnished with Jen's furniture and thrift store finds. "When I see cool glasses, an ashtray or tip jar, I buy it," said Jones.

"Bands who come through here" - and they come from NYC, San Francisco, Austin, etc - "are so happy to find this place. They take pictures around the stage, or the jackrabbit or the horses, and put it on their myspace," added Maddox.

Fri, Nov 2, a show of Dia de los Muertos art curated by Conchita McElwee will peer from the walls. Says her flyer, "Art at 8 pm. Music at 10 pm: Zack the Rookie, Power Pellut, and, from Brooklyn, White Rabbit."

See the Jackrabbit myspace to get a tall glass of diversity. "What I like about this place," says Maddox, who was about to do a "one-time deal" called Nerf Nugget, "is that if you've got a good idea, Jen will book it."

A three-ring circus of art and people is what you will see at Artspace, 710 Texas, on Fri, Nov 17. Having previewed the exhibit I must say the big building at 710 Texas St is bursting with well-displayed art. It seems to top last year's inaugural Deck the Halls.

The big names are there, including Bill Gingles, Jerry Wray, Tama Nathan, Mary Jane Potts, Ray Holt and Michael G Moore. There are also the folksy artists and some cute stuff. Something for almost everyone, as one would expect in a show designed to put art under the viewer's arm and his cash on the table.

The sale will run through Xmas. Last year many buyers went home from the reception with the choice pieces.

Upstairs is a strikingly cool show from artists abiding in Ruston, Monroe and Shreveport. They call themselves the Eye-Twenty Group, says Enoch Doyle Jeter, former Shreveporter and proprietor of Enoch's Pub. See his work and work from Linda Snider Ward, Charles Meeds, Laura Noland Harter and Kristi Hanna, among some 30 accomplished art mongers.

The clever ad man and artist Byron Gates has a one-man show upstairs, adjacent to the Eye Twenty show. Then there's art from YWCA youngsters in the Anderson Funtorium. That makes it a, gee, four-ring circus.

Generation XY Exhibit- Demaree-Hazelton-Harold

“We named the show Generation XY because we wanted to display our work with family influences spanning two generations as well as make a distinction as individuals,” said  Deborah Allen Demaree. 

Deborah Allen Demaree began showing her work at the Artist Transit in the 1980s. It from this point she went on show in shows such as the Shreveport National Exhibit, curated by Harry Rand of the Smithsonian Institute, creating her own clothing label, “Demaree” and sold hand painted clothing to stores all over the South. “I raised my children to question authority and live by their own convictions. Collectively, this show will resonate that ideal.”

Ashley Hazelton is showing 18 pieces of photography consisting of 9 different artists that are displaying hand painted artwork from 9 different local artists. She was inspired to take on the task of proving that photography is art after being told unless someone is holding a paint brush or pencil then what you’re creating is not real art. Ashley’s work will prove this concept as false by collaborating with various local artists and models for a strong “in your face” collection.

Micah Harold is a painter, musician, magician and tattoo artist. His graphic art has been featured in the Made-for-TV movie Not Like Everyone Else and his paintings have been exhibited in universities, galleries and museums. “I consider myself the medium for the individual to experience my world and what I see,” said Harold, tattoo artist at Fortune & Glory Tattoo Parlor.

Hot Jazz on the Red, the Friends of Barnwell Annual Summer Jazz Concert Series, has returned for a second year, says Freda Powell.

Five free concerts will run on consecutive Thursdays from May 31 to June 28. The sax will sound from 6:00 -7:30 pm each Thurs.

You are invited to bring a picnic basket and the Friends will offer a cash bar. The bar will include non-alcoholic drinks, says Powell.

The Barnwell's gardens and art shows will stay open from 10 am to 8 pm on concert dates.

Bidding at the Montessori Art Auction begins at 6 pm Saturday evening, says chairperson Jennifer Moorhead. Art Exhibition chairs Rhonda Hall and Donna Walker have gathered work by some 85 regional artists for the pleasure of the crowd of art lovers to descend upon the Shreveport Convention Hall.

A roomful of goods and services at silent auction is also part of the Montessori evening; the considerable array was organized by Melissa Dove Maurice and Kim Viniard.

Entertainment will be provided by a lovely, harmonizing group called Lip Service from 6 to 8 pm. Lip Service is followed by the rockin' quartet Drama Club, featuring blond singer Juliann Banks. They will play from 8 to 11 pm.

Light hors d'oeuvres will come from Bella Fresca, says catering person Susan Perkins. The cash bar will be humming with all manner of libations, says genial bar master Dr. Danny Payne.

The Student League of Art and Design hold 1st Annual Juried Art show.

The Student League of Art and Design (SLAD) at LSU-S, will be hosting their first annual juried art show at the Bossier City Arts Council, Tuesday, May 17 from 7 to 9PM.

The art show will feature student-created works inspired by this year’s theme, We Only Come Out At Night, and will range in different mediums from watercolor, to block printing, graphic design and mixed media.

Artworks will be critiqued and judged by National shown artist, Deborah Allen, who will administer awards to Best in Show, first, second and third places.

Refreshments and a liquor bar will also be available for guests.

The event was formed in order to offer students an opportunity to exhibit an original piece of artwork (per their interpretation of the theme), and to expand appreciation of the arts at LSU Shreveport.

Little Shanty Folk Art Gallery, founded by Robert and Alaina Currie, is a source for ideas in art marketing with ramifications for all the region's artists, says Robert Currie.

Currie is a guest on a new local issues radio show from KSCL, 91.3 fm, on Mondays, 5 to 5:30 pm: Time for A Better Shreveport. Hosts are Loren Demerath and Robert Trudeau.

Also on the live broadcast is Chase Boytim, of Fatty Arbuckle's Bar in the Red River District. Boytim is presenting a series of concerts under the bridge and has a show with folk-rock singer Citizen Cope on Thurs, Sept 16.

Art for Animals of Shreveport, LA. is expecting another furry event on November 19 to help the local animal rescue groups and have a great time, says Karen Guerin. The location is Pierrmont Mall. For the artisans and photographers who have numerous items to sell there is the Barktique de Noel area. And all money goes to local animal groups who provide sanctuary and find homes for abandoned animals.

Tickets are $5. Semolina Restaurant serves hot nibblies and wine. There's also a bar at which cash is welcome.

Art from all locations and in all media is welcome.

While Montessori of Shreveport is producing a silent auction of diverse goods this year, not an art auction, art will certainly be found at the 35th annual event.

There are hundreds of silent auction items - hundreds of bargains - along with a raffle and school pride items. The auction remains the school's largest fundraiser.

"The bidding and the bar will both open promptly at 6 pm," says Jennifer Morehead.. "Be there when the doors open so you can grab a frozen margarita and get your bids in early on your favorite items!"

The members event features a cash bar and hors d'oeuvres in addition to art.

Showtimes will be at 4:30, 5:45 and 7:00 p.m.

TEDxRedRiver explores the arts at minicine? in May, with talks by four local artists, says Sara Hebert.

TEDxRedRiver, an independently organized TED event, will present “Exploratory Arts” at 6:00 PM on May 22 at minicine?, 846 Texas Ave, Shreveport.

Speakers:

Andrew Parsons is a culinary artist who feels most fulfilled in collaboration with his
clients. As a chef, Andrew utilizes fresh, wholesome, as-local-as-possible ingredients to create gastronomic experiences. Parsons began his culinary career at Jay Rigby's in
Bradenton, FL, went on to cater farm parties in Denver, NC. He now owns Lagniappe Foods in Shreveport. His culinary experience comes full circle in the construction of highly-functional, memorable and exciting kitchens.

Pete Fetterman is a fire-breathing performance artist and musician. Fetterman has performed at the McNeil Street Pumping Station New Music Festival in 2009 and 2011. He has been involved in multiple collaborative music projects including Sound Medicine Research, Drum Militia and Mosquitosophagus. Fetterman often creates with found objects or handmade instruments in the exploration of sound. He will perform an original
composition.

Kathryn Usher creates artwork influenced by popular culture, voodoo and politics.
Her works incorporate digital media, fiber/textile, recycled/found objects and traditional materials. In 2010, she was recognized by UK art scholar Dr. Melissa Westbrook as one of the artists in the Neo-Outsider art movement. Usher is in the process of turning her frontyard into a folk art environment.

Dacoda Montana is a musician and artist whose performance-based, down-tuned, avant-distortion group John Calvin is an experiential multi-media methodology investigating the transformative nature of analog technologies.
He has toured nationally performing and exhibiting his experimental films and
melancholic "dirge-concrete" compositions. He believes in the importance of place.

Light refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be available.

Los Angeles printer Richard Duardo brings the exhibit Print to Artspace Shreveport; party Fri, Aug 16, 5 to 8 pm

Print is an exhibit of graphic art at Artspace Shreveport that runs from August 16 through October 12, says Megan Porter. The exhibit features limited edition fine art screen pieces from contemporary street artists such as Shepard Fairey, Cryptik and up-and-coming artists.

Opening reception is Fri, Aug 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. Expect cool nibbles, a cash bar and music by the Shreveport-based Americana group Victor Olston for your cover.

"Funky Friday is a, let's see, a *brand.* Funky is not meant to be taken literally," says Eric Gipson, emcee ne plus ultra. "In fact, my over-the-topness - not to worry, I can take a hit - is one of the few things that would qualify as remotely funky at Funky Friday."

But the music, food & drink, art and movie provide an easy-access party. "Remember Neon Saturday Nights?" says Pam Atchison. Atchison and her SRAC team, including event planner Bonne Summers, have created a variation on the Neon Nights formula.


“Wine Down” time from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at artspace-710 Texas Street, where guests can enjoy the tunes of Howell and Caskey with noshes provided by Bella Fresca restaurant. For those in the mood for libation, there is a cash bar.

Gates open for Funky Fridays at 7:00 pm with a $5.00 admission. Festival-goers can enjoy a live, on-stage performance by Bobbie “Mercie” Oliver and the Jam City Revue, participate in hands-on arts and crafts activities, and board a trolley to tour the venues in the west edge arts district.

At 9:00pm (or sundown) guests will sit in front of the Robinson Film Center outdoor screen to enjoy Some Lke It Hot. Guests are encouraged to bring their portable chairs.

As a special treat, on Friday, July 14th One-String Guitarist Robul Gibson of New Orleans will be playing in coolspace-second floor of artspace.

From 7:00 pm - 8:45 pm, board a trolley provided by A-1 Charter Service to Odyssey Sound Lab, where visitors have an opportunity to record their voices to music available in the studio that can be burned onto a commemorative CD. Or, enjoy a guided tour of the historic Municipal Auditorium.

View works by premiere Artist Frank Frazier at the Southern University Museum of Art. Works by Dorothy Kristi Hanna and Robin Rothrock will be on display at the Bistineau Gallery.

Take a sneak peak at the soon to open Robinson Film Center and upcoming River City Repertory Theatre in the 600 block of Texas Street.

The Multi-Cultural Center of the South has signed on as a special stop on the trolley tour providing hands-on dance lessons and demonstrations in the Art of Japanese Tea Service.

“Guests who attended the first Friday were impressed with the technology available at the Odyssey Sound Studio. Many were surprised that museums and galleries, as such, existed in Shreveport,” said Jim Boyter of A-1 Charter Service.

“Funky Fridays” is a community-oriented event intent on bridging the cultural gap in Shreveport and surrounding areas, says Atchison.
