Right & Left brains collide in Science In Art competiton at SciPort; register by Ap 21

Sci-Port Discovery Center announces the Second Annual Science in Art competition, open to any participant who creates an original artwork that
is inspired by a scientific or mathematical principle. Participants must register by Friday, April 21.

The competition is divided into three groups: Grades 5-8, 9-12 and Adult, says Eric Gipson.

Judging will take place at Sci-Port on Sat, Ap 29. Participants are asked to set up by 10 a.m. and be prepared to stand by their artwork and discuss its scientific or mathematical inspiration during the evaluation; judging begins at 10:30 a.m. Winners will be
announced at 1 p.m.

As both artists and scientists share the ability to visualize and find patterns in the world, Sci-Port hopes that the competition will appeal to both left and right-brained people.

“I found the concept of the competition quite stimulating and challenging,” said Kathy Brodnax, who won last year’s adult division with her pastel and acrylic interpretation of the metamorphosis of a butterfly. “It was fun to work within a context
that that was clear and full of possibilities.”

In addition to the quality and uniqueness of their artworks, entrants will be judged on how well they can explain the science or math concepts behind their submissions.

Registration forms are available at Sci-Port or at www.sciport.org (e-mail completed forms to rmcquire@sciport.org). Forms can also be dropped off at Sci-Port or faxed to (318) 424-8681. For more information about the competition, contact Robert McGuire at (318) 424-8714.
