Return of the Velo Dendro Shreveport bicycle tour: roll at 8:45 am on Sat, Oct 23, says sponsoring Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets
The Velo Dendro Shreveport Deux Tree Ride has been scheduled for Saturday, October 23, 2010, says local organizer Matthew Linn; 3030 Creswell St. (Kings Hwy at Creswell Avenue), Shreveport, (318) 425-3862;
Registration and prep for ride, 8.00 AM; Ride starts at 8.45 AM sharp.
We will get started early at Columbia Cafe, says Linn at the Velo Dendro Facebook site. From there we will roll over to Betty Virginia Park to join Shreveport Green in a tree planting as part of Shreveport Green's "Make a Difference Day" events. From there we will roll through the beautiful tree lined streets of South Highlands and Broadmoor and visit some of the City's most magnificent specimens, including the State Champion sycamore at A.C. Steere Park. We'll learn a little more about the trees, their care and their benefits. We will wind up the event with food and beverages at Columbia Cafe.
Children between 6 and 14 may be too large to ride on their parents bicycle and the distance (ten miles) may be too great for them if they ride their own bicycle. “Trail-a-bike” attachments allowing older children to ride behind a larger bike are welcome as are tandems. Please consider your child’s riding ability before registering for the tour.
Registration is $10 per rider.
Quite active in the capitol, BRASS has 3 autumn rides scheduled for those able to bring their bikes to Baton Rouge: the Velo du Potager, Sunday, October 10, the Velo Muerto el Tercero Historic Cemetery Ride, Sunday, October 31 and the Velo del Oro Treasures of LSU Ride on Sunday, on November 07.
They've also opened online registration for their events (there is an additional charge for the online service).

Gamesmanship: Eleanor vs Henry in The Lion In Winter by River City Repertory Theater at Riverview Theater, Sept 22-26
River City Repertory Theatre, Shreveport/Bossier’s professional theatre company, will open its fifth season with The Lion In Winter.
It opens Sept 22 at Riverview Theater and plays through Sept 26, says Patric McWilliams.
Keenly self-aware and motivated as much by spite as by any sense of duty, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine maneuver against each other to position one of their three sons next in line for the throne. The Tony Award-winning play was the basis for the 1968 Oscar-winning film starring Katherine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole.
Anne Lockhart will appear as Eleanor with BenTyler as Henry. Lockhart was seen as Lt. Sheba on the ABC series, Battlestar Galactica and has made frequent appearances on Law and Order, NCIS and JAG.
Tyler is an actor from Phoenix and was seen in River City Rep’s premiere production The Little Foxes.
Also appearing will be Jonathan McVay, Logan Sledge, Luke Eddy, Jamie Norwood and Haley Young.
Patric McWilliams will direct and design the sets and costumes. Light Design is by David Gipson. Sound and Music Design is by Kermit Poling. Chelsea Hockaday is the Production Stage Manager.

Back in the 1920s, the most fun most folks had was going to the movies - the silent movies! And in the big movie palaces, says Fred McClanahan, those movies were accompanied by a great theater pipe organ. The organist, always a master of improvisation, provided much of the emotion and and excitement of the film with scene-appropriate music and sound effects.

Film trove from documentarian Bill Daniels @ minicine? on Wed, Sept 15, 8 pm
Film Tramp Bill Daniel is back in the van and on tour with a new program of recently unearthed16mm footage, says David Nelson. Most of this footage is truly orphaned film--- abandoned, lost, found, and now presented raw without editing, and none of it has seen the light of YouTube.
Sonic Orphans is a collection of lost and found music film clips--- a weird mix of oddities… from raw news footage of the Beatles arriving in San Francisco in 1965, silent rushes from a 1977 student film starring the Avengers, a 1980 student film featuring early Austin punks Boy Problems and the Huns…
Also as part of this program, Daniel will absolutely cover the walls with his high contrast B&W documentary photos shot at punk shows, mainly Austin, TX, between 1980 and 1984. This includes Texas bands such as, The Big Boys, Butthole Surfers, DRI, Toxic Shock and touring bands, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains and the Minute Men.
Discussion during the night will explore the relationship between underground film and music cultures…

Five dance companies in Ballet Under the Stars on Sat, Sept 11, 7:30 pm, Riverview Theater
Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet presents its annual fall dance concert "Ballet Under the Stars," this year being held in Riverview Theater by popular demand!
This casual, family-friendly event brings together 5 local dance companies and schools for an evening performance that celebrates the diversity of dance styles and performers in our community.
The performance will showcase contemporary and classical ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, and liturgical dance pieces presented by the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, Shreveport Dance Academy, Christian Dance Center, Power and Grace School of Performing Arts, and Louisiana Dance Theatre.
A special educational program for children will be presented during the intermission.

Highland Blues & Jazz Fest features former Shreveporter Kevin Russell and The Gourds on Sat, November 13
The 7th annual Highland Jazz + Blues Festival welcomes The Gourds, fresh from live performances on Austin City Limits, to Columbia Park on Saturday, November 13, says Liz Swaine.
Gourds singer-songwriter Kevin Russell lived in Shreveport in the 80's and fronted a punk band called the Picket Line Coyotes. You can catch a bit of his nostalgia for that era in the tune, "Shreveport," from The Gourds excellent album, "Haymaker."
Also in the Highland Fest lineup are David Egan and Twenty Years of Trouble, Robin and the Bluebirds, AJ and the Two Tone Blues Band, AJ Haynes and the Monkey Business, Buddy Flett and friends, Otis Ockley and The Space Travelers.

Wanetah Walmsley vs James Palmer in the David Mamet play Oleanna: LSUS Black Box, Sept 9 - 19
Oleanna is a two-character play by David Mamet about the power struggle between a university professor and one of his female students. A series of miscommunications results in her accusation of sexual exploitation.
Robert Alford has directed the edgy drama, which features Wanetah Walmsley and James Palmer.
It opens Th, Sept 9 at 8 pm.

Eclectic jazz from a well-traveled quartet: the Jacob Fred Jazz Orchestra plays Centenary College, Anderson Auditorium, Wed, Sept 8, 8:30 pm

The trippin' Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey will appear at Hurley Music Building at Centenary College in Anderson Auditorium on Wed, September 8 at 8:30 pm, says Kirk Reedstrom.
The eight original compositions on their new album, Stay Gold, showcase a revamped JFJO lineup, with lap steel guitarist Chris Combs and bassist Jeff Harshbarger joining drummer Josh Raymer and keyboardist and founding member Brian Haas.
Combining experimental jazz with influences from Tulsa hometown heroes like J.J. Cale and Leon Russell, the ever-evolving Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is at home with the jam band audience as well as the traditional jazz crowd.
Your editor considers this one of the best opportunities to hear modern jazz in Shreveport this fall.

A small, green change for Shreveport: the A Better Shreveport Candidates Bike Ride drew over 50 riders and walkers for downtown fun
An air of unlikely holiday prevailed at the Central Fire Station on Th, Sept 2, as candidates for mayor and city council gathered amidst a bevy of bikers.
It was a forum on wheels. The promise was that candidates would intro themselves and then pedal alongside their potential constituents. Additionally, part of the group would walk the distance.
The event was organized by A Better Shreveport, a grassroots civic organization. The producers incuded Stephanie Pedro, Carolyn Manning, April Waren and Robert Trudeau.
The cycle route wound around the Municipal Auditorium, past Aseana Gardens, and up Texas Ave to 846 Texas. There, at minicine?, the group gulped water and listened to arts producer David Nelson.
Tour leader was Garrett Johnson, who spoke about SRAC's plans for the Central Fire Station. At historic Municipal Auditorium the riders heard recent research findings from historian Chris 'Southern Maid Hot Donuts' Brown.
Pedaling toward the river, the group loitered outside Robinson Film Center and palavered with Chris Jay. The walking group tarried at Artspace and heard Pam Atchison introduce the blues band which wailed in the background.
Carolyn Manning kept the gang of walkers on pace despite telling stories about downtown street sculptures.
As the bikers rolled past Noble Savage, waiter Pete Fetterman and musicians from the Dirty Red Jam waved at the colorful stream of riders.
At the terminus,the Commerce St office co-op called CoHabitat, John Grindley invited the group to park and party in the schvingy space.
The bike ride was a prelude to next Thursday's Candidates Pub Quiz Forum, to be held at CoHabitat over drinks and snacks. It begins at 6 pm. Questions for the candidates have been solicited from across the city, said Pedro.
