Their recent performance at Artspace during a Thursday Night Trolley bash reminded me that the duo of Monty and Marsha is one of the region's best for traditional bayou music.

Dia de los Muertos party features a 4-course supper by Shreveport chef John Salmon and Like Water for Chocolate on Fri, Oct 12, 7 pm
Artspace welcomes chef John Salmon on Fri, Oct 12. He will cook a 4-course meal featuring dishes made of chocolate, says Pam Atchison. Additionally, there will be a Kahlua and tequila tasting. "Muy delicio," she says, expectantly. Between courses sample Robert Trudeau's 10-minute documentary, "Dia de los Muertos in Shreveport." The video features interviews with some 15 local Mexican-Americans about their memories of Dia in Mexico. A showing of the classic Mexican film Like Water for Chocolate will follow.

Requiescat in pace: G. Scott Griffin
Scott Griffin is dead of cancer, said Alan Dyson, longtime friend. Griffin was a photographer, film & video director and graphic design artist who struggled with his illness for over a year.
He lived in the Shreveport area off and on the last twenty years, says Friends of Scott Griffin.com. On the news of his illness a remarkable outpouring of support buoyed Griffin and his family. At the site a remarkable number of people are credited with helping develop a care fund and celebrating his artistic work.

Review: Vince, Brown and Williams find chemistry and comedy in the urbane drama Burn This; see it Oct 13, 14 at 8 pm, LSUS Theater, Shreveport
Pruitt Taylor Vince plays a burned-out restaurant manager from Jersey who lurches into the life of an East Village choreographer in the play Burn This. Directed by Robert Alford at LSUS, the production will play on Sun, Oct 7, as well as next Sat and Sun, Oct 13 and 14.
Vince commanded the stage Saturday night by canny movement. Timing, gestures and body English were his tools as much as sonorous voice. He careened between bully and sweet guy - with charisma. He was menacing. He was also ludicrous.
Happily, the audience for the Saturday night performance at LSUS Theater recognized the humor inherent in the pretentious lives of sophisticated New Yorkers. Partly because it is soupy with cliches, Burn This, written in 1987, seemed more of a comedy than a tragedy.
The girl, a chronic coquette played by the sexy Megan Brown, already has a boyfriend. And a quasi-boyfriend. And comfort in the largely gay creative community of the Village. Suddenly none of them seem as stimulating as the chimerical guy from Jersey, despite their money - the boyfriend, played by Gordon Christy - and talent - the roommate / soul mate played by Ryan Williams.
Williams, a first-rate local actor-director, was as capable in evoking laughter and sympathy as the better-known Vince and Brown.
Vince has returned to Louisiana in the midst of a successful Hollywood career. Brown's movie credits include Mr Brooks and the upcoming Brad Pitt movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as well as National Lampoon's Robodoc.
At 2 hours and 45 minutes length, the production felt like a real-time drama. But the seduction scene which ends act 1 was so appealing - initially improbable, therefore a marvel - that we found the stamina to see the denouement.
As much as the play, viewers will enjoy watching movie people seeking their actor's passion in stage work. On a misbegotten stage in the hinterlands (Williams observed that the opening night audience was as stiff as a cadaver) Vince and Brown seemed to be having fun exploring their chemistry.
Be aware of the play's stream of New York language and the marvelous ways in which Brown displays her physical charms.

What to do when the Revel's gone: SciPort's iMax Theater has undersea movie narrated by Depp & Winslet

What there is to sea at RW Norton Art Foundation Gallery, Shreveport: a century of paintings about ship and shore, through Oct 28
Rivers, Sea and Shore is an exhibition of 50 dramatic paintings exploring a century of American life on the water, from 1830 to 1945. It was organized from the collection of Arthur J. Phelan and sent to tour by the Trust for Museum Exhibitions.
Thereupon a viewer will find ships and seascapes, rivers and boats and seaside towns.
"After impressionism crossed the Atlantic, artist colonies were established on the Northeast Coast. Many notable artists working near Old Lyme, Connecticut, are represented in this exhibition. Many Connecticut artists painted seaside towns that had long been associated with whaling or commerce, reflecting nostalgia for a pre-industrial time," says the Trust.
Also, "By the 1930s, artistic subjects began to turn to industrialization. Concerns about joblessness created greater respect for industrial waterfronts, ferry boats, iron ships, bridges, and cars – all seen in this exhibition."
